Today, Esikhawini Regional Court convicted and sentenced Siboniso Mthembu (20) from Dlangezwa to 25 years in prison for rape. He was convicted after the court heard how he raped a 21-year-old student of University of Zululand in 2012.
On 27 January 2012 at about 18:00 the victim was at Mthunzini area waiting for her friend for assistance as she was looking for a room to reside. She was approached by the accused who offered to help her and took her to some rooms where he raped her. A case of rape was opened at Mthunzini police station for further investigation and Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences took over the docket. Through investigation, the accused was identified and arrested. He was charged with rape and appeared in court several times until he was convicted.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Empangeni FCS detectives for thoroughly investigating the case and sent well prepared docket to court which led to the successful prosecution of the rapist. “We will always work hard to bring the criminals to book who abuse vulnerable and defenceless women and children,” she said.
