At 12:00 Today, a 29-year-old man was stabbed to death, allegedly by two suspects aged 31 and 41 years, at the corner of Grey and Victoria Streets in Durban. It is alleged that the deceased was stealing from the suspects’ shop when he was caught and stabbed. He sustained a stab wound on the neck and died instantly. Both suspects were arrested by Durban Central Police for murder and will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon.
The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police on the arrests. “We are extremely concerned about people taking the law into their own hands. The police must be given the space to do their job of investigating the crime and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book”.
Note to news editors: As yet, the nationalities of the suspects have not been verified. We once again urge members of the media to be responsible and refrain from labelling each and every incident of crime involving locals and foreigners as xenophobic attacks as this could have dire unintended consequences.
