A 62-year-old man appeared in the Mahlabathini Magistrate’s Court facing possession of unlicensed firearm yesterday, 21 January 2015. He was remanded in custody for further investigation.
The suspect was arrested on 20 January 2015 by the Ulundi Tactical Response Team at Ezikhumbeni area in Ulundi. The members were patrolling their area at night when they followed up information about unlicensed shotgun in the area.
Information led them to an identified homestead and it was searched. An unlicensed shotgun with 13 shotgun ammunition was recovered. The suspect was then placed under arrest as he did not have a licensed to possess such a firearm. The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni highly praised the police in this province for getting rid of illegal firearms from the criminals. “I would like to thank members of the community for their continued support in the fight against crime in the province,” she said.
