A local induna from Msinga has been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was arrested with another man during the operation conducted by the police in the area.
Both suspects aged 73 and 62 years will appear today, 8 June 2015 in the Msinga Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police Task Team Unit were conducting their daily operations at Msinga area from Sunday, 7 June 2015 until this morning raiding unlicensed firearms in the area.
They followed up information about illegal firearms at Ophathe area, Msinga. A homestead belonging to a local induna (73) was searched and an unlicensed pistol with ammunition was found. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm.
The members moved to another homestead in the area where a 62-year-old man’s house was searched. An unlicensed pistol with ammunition was also recovered. The suspect was arrested and charged accordingly. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the country.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the POP members for arresting the suspects and recovery of unlicensed firearms.
“It is through the dedicated efforts of Units such as these that we have been able to remove hundreds of firearms of our streets. The local induna is supposed to lead by an example and not get involved in any criminal activities,” she said.
