A 33-year-old man was recently found guilty of raping a 17-year-old girl. On 6 May 2015, Sifiso Michael Mjiyakho was sentenced in the Ezakheni Regional Court to 15 year imprisonment. His conviction and sentencing stems from an incident which occurred on 23 April 2013 along Pieters Road outside Ladysmith.
A 17-year-old girl and her neighbour had walked to church and as they made their way back home along Pieters Road they soon noticed a man carrying a firearm, following them. They began to run and the man chased them. He caught one of the girls and she was raped while being threatened with a firearm. After the incident, the victim ran home and reported the incident to her family. A case of rape was opened at Ladysmith police station and it was transferred to Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation. After a thorough investigation, her assailant was traced and arrested.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded Ladysmith FCS for tracing, tracking and arresting the suspect. “We will continue to make sure that those who prey on vulnerable women are put behind bars,” she said.
