DURBAN: A KwaZulu-Natal police leader has been lauded for going beyond the call of duty and arresting a murder suspect. The culprit is scheduled to appear at Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. The Thornville station commander, who was not named, was at his house at Emgodini area, Plessislaer on Saturday afternoon when a fight broke out between two people nearby. He went to intervene and he was approaching them, the suspect pulled a firearm and shot the victim on the stomach.
The victim (25) was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries. The suspect was immediately arrested and was found in possession of a pistol suspected to be used in the killing of the victim. A licensed 9mm pistol was also recovered and will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the station commander for immediately arresting the suspect. “The member was off duty and he made an effort to make an arrest. We willleave no stone unturned this festive season and those who commit crimes will face the law,” she said.
