NAIROBI: KENYA’S prominent marathon runner, Rita Jeptoo, faces a four year ban from the sport if found guilty of using enhancing substances.
Jeptoo’s case of failed dope test in September is currently under investigation with the outcome expected in three months. She had had her Sh45,7m ($500,000) prize for winning the last World Marathon Majors series withheld over allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs.
Athletics Kenya (AK) President, Isaiah Kiplagat, revealed the investigations. Apart from Jeptoo allegations, it is believed that 32 other Kenyan athletes might be punished for allegedly using banned substances.
According to Athletics Kenya, more than 30 local athletes gave failed dope tests, a development which is now threatening the country’s track and road racing successes.
“We have garnered a lot of information. This case has not been concluded simply because there is a lot of information that has come about through the hearing and we have to go back and consult,” said Mwangi Mwangi, one of the AK officials into the matter.
