Police have opened a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident involving a security guard at the Golden Walk Mall in Germiston today at about 14:00.
The incident follows allegations of a false complaint of armed robbery in progress. It is alleged that the security guards who were loading an ATM fired shots at police members after the security guards mistook them for being armed robbers. The police members who were in civilian clothes were busy with routine patrols at the mall. When the members approached the security guards to establish if everything is fine, the security guards mistook the police members for being armed robbers. The security guards fired two shots subsequently wounding the one police member in the leg. The member has been taken to hospital for medical treatment and is currently in a stable condition.
No one has been arrested as investigation of attempted murder is continuing.
