Five Lives Saved By the Empangeni Search and Rescue Unit [press release]

Yesterday, at approximately 14:00, four children aged between eight and sixteen were bathing in the White Umfolozi River in Ulundi. Due to recent heavy rains the river began to flood resulting in the children being trapped in the middle of the river. A local man in his twenties who witnessed the incident attempted to rescue the children and also got into difficulty. The Empangeni Search and Rescue Unit was immediately contacted and rushed out to the scene. Due to their specialized training and high tech equipment they were able to rescue the four children and the man.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised members of the Empangeni Search and Rescue Unit for their bravery and dedication to saving lives under very treacherous conditions. “During the festive season members of our K9 Units as well as Search and Rescue Units are on standby to attend to drownings, accidents and other life threatening incidents. These members deserve praise for the work they do often putting their lives on the line to save that of others,” she said.
