On 11 May 2015, the Durban High Court convicted and sentenced Mzuyana Mzi Mntambo (31) to 15 years imprisonment for murder and arson that occurred on 9 February 2014 in the Umlazi Glebe informal settlement.
It is alleged that Xolani Khomo (51) was at his house when he was approached by the accused who accused him of practicing witchcraft. The suspect then set the victim’s house alight while the victim was still inside. Khomo sustained burn injuries all over his body and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Following an intensive investigation police were able to locate the whereabouts of the accused and he was arrested on 15 April 2014. He made several court appearances before his conviction.
The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the work that led to the successful conviction of the murderer. “We will continue to ensure that all those that break the law find themselves behind bars. People should stop taking law into their own hands and allow police to perform their duties,” she said.
