Reports of the detention of a journalist at Eskom’s Majuba Power Station yesterday are cause for serious concern.
According to reports, @Netwerk24 journalist, Le Roux Schoeman was detained yesterday and later released by security at Majuba Power Station for taking photos of a “National Key Point”.
My colleague, the DA’s Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, Natasha Michael, will request an urgent briefing of Parliament’s Public Enterprises by the Minister of Public Enterprises and Eskom management on South Africa’s ongoing power crisis.
At this meeting I will request a full explanation on why Eskom is using an Apartheid law, the National Key Point Act, to – as it would appear – to hide Majuba Power Station from public scrutiny.
The DA will continue to guard against any attempts to curtail the right of the media to gather and disseminate information in the public interest.
Press freedom is the cornerstone of any democracy, and indeed, ours.
