The alertness and swift response by Melmoth police has led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of a stolen vehicle as well as four unlicensed firearms.
The cry for help by a 37-year-old man was heard by vigilant police of Melmoth who did not hesitate to follow the armed suspects who had entered his house and sped off with his vehicle.
On 28 April 2015 at 21:00, four unknown men armed with firearms entered a house in the Umlalazi area at Eshowe. The suspects demanded cellphones as well as car keys before fleeing with the victims vehicle. Police who were alerted of the incident followed the suspects to Melmoth where they were arrested and found in possession of firearms. The firearms were seized and the vehicle was also recovered.
The suspects will be charged for robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms. They will appear at Eshowe Magistrates Court soon. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in the commission of any other crime in the country.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised police for their vigilance which led to the arrests and seizure of unlicensed firearms.
“These firearms kill many innocent people and we hope that their seizure will also assist us in solving other cases. Detectives will conduct an investigation that will guarantee that that these criminals are linked to other criminal cases and are sent to prison indefinitely,” she said.
