Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police are continuing with their operations to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province. Yesterday at about 23:30, they embarked on an intelligence driven operation and stormed into a house at Msinga where they arrested a 62-year-old male for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They conducted a search and found him in possession of an AK 47 rifle with six live rounds of ammunition at KwaLatha area, Msinga. He was charged and is appearing at Msinga Magistrates’ Court today. They proceeded to another homestead in the area where there were no occupants but a 303 rifle and an empty pistol magazine was recovered.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded POP members on the recovery of firearms and the arrest. “These operations will continue to make sure that we eradicate illegal firearms in our province. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of crime. We hope that the seizure of these firearms will assist us to solve our pending cases,” she said.
