ABUJA: THE Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern at the incessant attacks on civilians by members of Boko Haram terror sect.
According to a statement obtained by this publication from the regional body’s headquarters in Abuja, the President of the commission, Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, was particularly saddened by the recent attack and destruction carried out by the sect in Baga town where thousands people are reported dead.
“While strongly condemning these despicable acts and wanton disregard for human life and property, the President on behalf of the ECOWAS Community extends solidarity and heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement read.
The commission reiterated its commitment to work with the government of Nigeria, member states and all stakeholders to halt these incessant attacks that continue to pose great threats to the peace, security and stability of the region.
It also welcomed efforts by the African Union, the Lake Chad Basin Commission and others in this regard.
