VETERAN South African rugby player Schalk Burger, who defied life threatening disease, has been awarded the Come-Back of the Year accolade at the Laureus World Sports Awards.
The awards dinner was held at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in China on Wednesday.
An excited Burger overcame meningitis to bounce back into rugby.
ldquoI remember the day where my wife phoned and everyone said, listen, this is probably it, it’s time to say goodbye. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. It was super scary if you think back now.
“But when you’re going through the middle of this and there’s no time to think really, there’s no time to think about consequences it was pretty much just me versus something,rdquo he said.
Meanwhile, the awards which were announced in seven categories also saw another African, Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia ,clinch the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year after breaking three world records in different events in two weeks.
The World’s Sportsman of the Year Award went to Serbiarsquos Novak Djokovic, with German Football Team named Laureus World Team of the Year while American duo of wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden winning the Laureus Disability Award and Alan Eustace receiving the Laureus Action Sports Award.
Australiarsquos Daniel Ricciardo was named winner of the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after a brilliant rookie season in which he won three Formula One Grand Prix for Red Bull.
CAJ News Africa editor, Savious-Parker Kwinika was one of the international media panelists tasked to select the Laureus World Sports Awards winners.
