Police in Soweto have opened an inquest docket following an incident in which one of the suspected hijackers (Bonginkosi Ndlovu-25) fatally shot himself while police were about to arrest him in the early hours of this morning at Emndeni. Five (5) of his accomplices linked to more than ten (10) of hijackings in Soweto have been taken into custody and police also seized two (2) unlicensed firearms. They are detained in Jabulani Police station for the purpose of an identification parade before they may be taken to Protea Magistrate Court within 48 hours.
An operation to track down the suspects involved in hijacking of Nissan vans around Soweto was conducted by members of Crime Intelligence, Vehicle Identification Unit and local detectives assisted by the K9 Unit. After one suspect was arrested in Moroka, he took the police to where the other suspects were hiding. Five of them were arrested, When police went to the address of the sixth suspect, he allegedly shot himself in the upper body and was certified dead at the scene. He allegedly shot himself with an unlicensed pistol. Therefore two pistol were seized, the second pistol from one of the five suspects during an arrest.
Police have been following information on this gang as from 2014, after several vehicles of the same model were being hijacked. Several people who are suspected to be in possession of these hijacked vehicles may be arrested very soon as police continue with investigation. One of the arrested suspects has also been linked to a murder case in Moroka.
