DA Condemns Inhumane Treatment of Cop Cadets [press release]

The DA condemns the cruel and inhumane treatment of police cadets at the Bishops Lavis Training College. The Minister of Police, Nathi Nhleko, must investigate the situation immediately and refer senior police at the training college to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) as may be necessary.

This comes after reports alleging that police trainees at the Bishops Lavis Training College were forced)to scavenge for food in rubbish bins. Reports also indicate that superiors released tear gas into the living quarters of the cadets. This kind of hazing is completely unacceptable.

We need training colleges to be professionally and humanely administered so that we can produce excellent police officers that are able to enforce the law and fight crime in line with human rights norms. We must care for our police officers from their first day of training if they are to carry out their duties with the same care to citizens.

We won’t allow this inhumane and appalling treatment to continue. The Minister must act to stop this nonsense immediately.

I will be visiting the Training College to assess everything that is going on at this facility, at which point I will make submissions to the Minister and the National Police Commissioner to improve the conditions at this training college.
