COSATU has been negotiating with MetroRail for months to improve the rail service. We demanded that MetroRail do not increase their fares until there is a significant improvement in the service. According to Metrorail, this would be achieved by the end of July when the new measures are all implemented. Despite the reasonable request for the Fare Increases to be suspended until services are improved, they went ahead with the implementation of these unfair, Fare increases.
We are therefore taking action against them to show our dissatisfaction with the bad service, unreliable trains and the fare increases.
DATE: SATURDAY 12 July 2014
TIME: 11AM – 12NOON
COSATU calls on all commuters who have suffered the problem of over-crowded and late trains and those who have suffered the triple cost of train cancelations:
– Where you have already purchased your ticket for a week or a month
– then have to pay for a taxi, andor a bus when trains are delayed
– then get to work late and don’t get paid for lost time due to MetroRail failing to provide an efficient and effective train service.
The roll out of the My Citi Bus Service also exposes the way in which the Mayor and the City discriminates between communities of the Cape Flats and others, as, the City elected to start the roll out of the new and ldquoimprovedrdquo service to the area of Milnerton, where this community is generally more affluent and where people have their own vehicles and is able to afford any mode of transport. No fancy bus stops are constructed in our areas and people have to stand around, waiting for a bus that may or may not arrive, in extremely uncomfortable environs.
We call on all people affected by the bad services to join the protest!
We demand that MetroRail improves the service and reduce the fares immediately.
We demand that the City rolls out Equal Services to Rich and Poor areas alike!
