The Congress of South African Trade Union is worried about farm workers being attacked, threatened and intimidated by white racist farmers at a farm called Model Park at Kleinfontein in the area of Brits.
COSATU has learned that workers are being threatened for reporting the attacks, led by the owner of the farm who has never been arrested for these attacks, which we are told that are happening almost every week, reported to the police and they end up back in the street.
We are calling on the police of Brits to report to the provincial commissioner on why they cannot arrest the farmers and their vigilante groups and to report on what happened to other cases that have been reported to the police and the allegations and complaints from the farm workers who are attacked every weekend, and even during working hours.
COSATU NW will not keep quiet and we will not rest until farm workers are treated with humanity and their rights are respected.
The DA, the SPCA and the media made a noise and gave high coverage of animals, including pigs, that were allegedly treated badly by the former premier of the NW, but they cannot condemn the killings and the racial attacks on farm workers by their own friends. What is important to them are animals not human beings, in particular workers who were employed by the former premier.
COSATU NW is still doing its investigation on the matter of workers. If we find that those workers were treated badly we will take up the matter with the former premier.
We are calling on those workers to report the matter to the federation or Department of Labour so that we can deal with their issues if they were exploited. We think that those are our priorities not animals.
We call on the DA, SPCA and those who exposed the treatment of those animals to tell us about the workers. There are so many farmers who are not complying on the treatment of workers and their animals, but they are quiet. Some evict workers when it is raining or during winter. Some make workers pay for accommodation which is highly dilapidated, where even those pigs cannot stay, but the DA and its friends keep quiet.
We call on government to help both the farmers and farm workers. While they respect their animals, they must also respect farm workers and their families.
We need full coverage on the story of farm workers who are attacked by groups of farmers with their vigilantes. They must be exposed and be arrested.
