The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere. ldquoTake Action Inspire Change Make Every Day a Mandela Day.rdquo
For the past five years millions have volunteered 67 minutes of their time on 18th July for the common good to mark Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of activism for South Africa’s democracy and freedom. The call to do good deeds in his name started at the United Nations General Assembly in 2009 and has expanded to 126 countries this year.
This year, 2014, is the first time that our country and the world celebrate Mandela Day without our icon, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the first State President of a democratic South Africa. Our country will always be proud that it produced one of the most loved and respected statesman the world has ever seen.
We have witnessed many millions of our workers countrywide and the world observing their 67 minutes on Mandela Day by contributing and giving back to the less disaantaged in our communities. The President of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has directed South Africans to honour Madiba’s memory through a massive ldquoOperation Clean Up for Mandelardquo campaign.
We therefore wish to send words of gratitude to all the workers and shop stewards and COSATU affiliates for participating in their numbers in various clean up campaigns in the province.
COSATU in Limpopo will this year be embarking on a Mandela Day in partnership with Old Mutual, targeting a rural area which does not have electricity and water. We will be donating WataCooka 5 in 1 stoves which is a stove, heater, bread oven, kettle and LED light in one and Hippo Rollers that caries 90L of water.
Five (5) households will benefit from the donation of WataCooka and twenty five (25) to benefit from the Hippo Rollers. The event will be hosted as follows:
