COSATU Free State fully supports the demands of NUM members employed by 3 Sixty Construction Company based in Estoire, Bloemfontein, on their demands towards a living wage. The company has been paying workers way below the prescribed minimums within the sector.
It is not surprising that 3 Sixty Construction Company does not come out clearly in terms of the sector where it belongs, whether it is the construction or civil sector. We have been fully briefed and hold the view that they are in the civil sector.
The reality is that whether 3 Sixty Construction is in the civil sector or construction sector the rates they are paying are way below the sector minimum. Currently the minimum for both sectors are the following: civil is at R25.00 and construction is at R20.00. At the rate of R10.00 per hour the company is still way below the minimum. We hold the view that the company has the capacity to comply with the sector minimums and that should be implemented without any further delay.
As COSATU we fully support these demands as they fit snugly within our demands and campaign for better working conditions which are intended to improve the standard of living for our members. The struggle continues.
