The Newlands Magistrate’s Court has on Tuesday handed a hefty sentence to two accused who were found guilty of dealing in narcotics.
Ernest Ikechukwu Okoye (41) and Mentiz Kingsley Marcu Mmanwokedire (49) were arrested in December 2009 following a successful operation which was dubbed ‘Basi’ at the time. The two sold narcotics to undercover police officers.
Okoye and Mmanwokedire were each found guilty on six counts of dealing in narcotics and were subsequently sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each.
The Acting Head of the Hawks Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza praised the investigating officer for a sterling job which led to the conviction of suspects. He said the drug dealers should know that the Hawks are out for them and that their days were numbered.
“This sentence will go a long way in sending a message to other drug dealers that no leniency will be shown on any convicted drug dealer. We are out to rid our streets of all kinds of drugs and all drug dealers should continue their trade at their own risk”, said Ntlemeza.
