The Minister of Small Business Development should consult her principals to review the name of her Department.
This was the view of the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development, Ms Ruth Bhengu, during a meeting today between the Department and the Committee. The suggestion came after Committee Members raised their concerns that the name of the Department did not include cooperatives.
“We are not holding the Department accountable at the moment, but we are making contributions to help you structure it appropriately. We feel that the name should rather be the Department of Small Business and Cooperatives Development in order to ensure that cooperatives are not marginalised,” Ms Bhengu said.
The Committee Chairperson added that the promotion of cooperatives could reduce industrial action so prevalent in the country at present, as most cooperatives are owned by the employees.
During the meeting, the Minister of the newly formed Department, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, made a presentation on the mandate of her Department, saying it would focus on enhanced support to small businesses and cooperative development, with an emphasis on programmes to aance entrepreneurship amongst women, people with disabilities and youth to effectively contribute to job creation and economic growth.
