The DA condemns, in the gest possible terms, the kidnapping of over 250 schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Nigeria.
We also call on the South African government to do everything possible to support the Nigerian government in its efforts to ensure the safe return of these girls.
Last month Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, begun a kidnapping spree which targeted girls’ schools in northern Nigeria. It is believed that this extremist group has thus far kidnapped 276 schoolgirls.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau vowed the children would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.
South Africa cannot afford to distance itself from this Nigerian crisis because it will, in effect, be an endorsement of these crimes.
We trust that such a disgusting affront on human rights will not be tolerated by the international community and that the South African government will play its part in combatting this terrorism.
Wilmot James, DA Federal Chairperson
