ABUJA: SUSPECTED Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly kidnapped two local businessmen in Gamboru, Borno State. The businessmen (names withheld) were reportedly taken away in an unmarked two Toyota Hilux to an unknown destination along the Nigerian border with Cameroon by heavily armed abductors.
A witness who spoke on the phone to journalists from Gamboru said, “Some hoodlums burst into the market square in vehicles and told the people not to be panic. They subsequently went for the two businessmen who they bundled into their vehicle and sped off without killing any person at the market square and mosque.”
He said people were shocked and terrified following the abduction of their colleagues. “The gunmen had been terrorizing us with sporadic gunshots in nearby villages and settlements on the Dikwa-Ngala road. This road had become a route, where the insurgents have a field day, snatching people’s vehicles and in some cases killing innocent travelers,” the witness said.
He lamented that the military and police in the border areas of Cameroon and Dikwa-Maiduguriwere allegedly not assisting. “We had to resort to our vigilante youths patrolling most of the streets of Gamboru up to 1 and 3 every morning.”
Gamboru is a border town with Cameroon and 138 kilometres northeast of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. A security source, who spoke anonymously, said there was an attempted attack on Gambouru on Wednesday night by suspected insurgents. “We could not get any casualties reports from the locals, as the gunmen attempted to attack and cause havoc in Gambouru border town,” he said.
