LAGOS: A fraudulent man who duped a woman more of than N1,5 million claiming he was an army man and would secure her employment into the forces will spend the next seven years in prison.
Justice Ajoku of the Federal High Court in Benin, Edo State convicted and sentenced one Emmanuel Sunday (alias Umoh Sunday Iyang, Iyang Samuel Chukwudi) to seven and half years imprisonment without an option of fine for obtaining money under false pretence.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the suspect last year on an eight-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.
He pleaded not guilty to the count charge. ustice Ajoku found him guilty on the five-count amended charge and sentenced him to thirty months imprisonment each of the counts. The court also ordered that the convict forfeit his two phones to the Federal Government.
According to EFCC, Sunday posed as an Army Captain to defraud one Igue Endurance of the sum of N1, 545 million in the pretext that the said amount would be used to facilitate her recruitment into the Nigerian Army. He was arrested following the Nigerian Army, 4 Brigade/sector 1, Operation Pulo Shield.
