LAGOS: THE All Progressives Congress (APC) said it had received information the People’s Democratic Party planned to attack the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan in the Rivers State. This would then be blamed on the APC, the opposition party claimed.
According to the alleged plan, which APC claimed it was in possession of, “huge sums” of money and several APC T-shirts will be provided to groups of PDP thugs who will stone the convoy of the President during the presidential campaign rally set for Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
According to the information, APC claimed, the money and T-shirts will be distributed to the thugs by Tuesday. “The idea behind this satanic plot is to paint the APC in bad light before the media, observers and the Nigerian public. Another objective of the evil plan is to divert attention from the various acts of violence that PDP thugs have unleashed on APC members and property across Rivers State in recent times.
“It is also meant to undermine the reputation of the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation,” Chris Finebone, Publicity Secretary of APC, said. He said amid such plans, the APC in Rivers State would like to state that its members would continue to undertake peaceful campaigns and always act within the ambit of the law and the peace.
This is according to the pact signed by its leaders both at the national and state levels. “We would continue to abhor electoral violence in whatever form and would like to call on the PDP and other parties to do same at all times,” said Finebone. “Finally, the APC would like to call on the Nigerian public to be alert and not succumb to the evil machinations of the PDP who have shown that it may be impossible to eschew electoral violence from their politics as it appears ingrained in their DNA. We call on security agencies to be aware of these dangerous antics of the PDP to maim, destroy and now blackmail the APC.”
PDP had not commented on the allegations at the time of publication. Political thugs have in recent weeks stoned Jonathan’s convoy in some states.
