Yesterday, 24 April 2015, Sydenham Police Station Crime Prevention members arrested two suspects aged 19 and 28 for possession of drugs and an unlicensed firearm. It is alleged that members were doing their crime prevention duties when they followed up information that led them to a flat.
They asked permission to search the place and they recovered a 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition. Members also recovered 655 ecstasy tablets, ten mandrax tablets, sixty eight whoonga straws, twenty nine crack cocaine and four cocaine units. The total street value of the drugs recovered is estimated to be worth R46 320-00.
The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tasting to ascertain if it was used to the commission of any crime in the country. The arrested suspects are due to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 28 April 2015.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the drugs as well as the unlicensed firearm. “This arrest is the evidence that our crime prevention members are observant and dedicated in their work,” she said.
