The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture has been hosting numerous events as part of Africa Month to strengthen social cohesion in the province.
The celebrations will culminate in a main event on 23 May at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
“The celebrations include an ambassadors’ breakfast, a street parade, African food tasting, performances and a keynote address by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu,” Provincial Arts and Culture Spokesperson Lethukuthula Mtshali said.
The theme for this year’s Africa Day event is: “We Are Africa: Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo.”
Africa Day is celebrated annually on 25 May, a day which marks the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963, and the African Union in 2002.
Africa Day will also mark the progress made by the continent to aance democracy, peace, stability and socio-economic development.
President Jacob Zuma will on Sunday lead the national Africa Day celebrations at the University of Pretoria, Mamelodi Campus.
