The Vrede Stock Theft Unit arrested nine suspects in Gauteng and a police official (32) from Mafube after linking them with alleged stock theft which occurred at Grootspruit Farm District Cornelia. They recovered 12 cattle and seized vehicles and trailers that were transporting the livestock in Gauteng.
It is alleged that on 16 January 2015 the farm owner realized that 27 cattle were missing on his farm. He informed the police of the incident at Vrede Stock theft Unit. They started their investigation which led them to Sharpeville and Everton in Gauteng Province where they first arrested seven suspects including a police official, recovered 12 cattle, and seized two bakkies and two trailers on 21 January 2015. On Monday, 26 January 2015 they followed information which saw the unit arresting another three suspects in Gauteng.
The first seven suspects including police official have appeared in Memel Magistrates’ court and the police officer appeared on Friday, 23 January 2015 and is out on bail of R2000. The other six suspects remains in custody. The departmental steps will also be instituted against the member. The three suspects arrested recently aged 43 and 46 will appear before Vrede Magistrate court on 29 January 2015 facing charge of stock theft and attempted stock theft. The 10 suspects are linked to three cases of stock theft in Cornelia one of attempted stock theft and two of stock theft. The Vrede police believe the arrests could reduce the stock theft incidents on farms in that area and surroundings.
