ZUMA CALLS FOR UNITY IN SOUTH AFRICA’S RULING ANC PARTY
South African President Jacob Zuma has led the 105th anniversary celebrations of the country's ruling African national Congress (ANC) here Sunday with a call for unity by all party members.
Zuma, who is also the ANC president, urged South Africans to emulate former ANC president Oliver Tambo, who would have turned 100 this year, saying Tambo stoo for unity of the ANC and the broader national unity as well as non-racialism.
Addressing the party's 105th anniversary celebrations at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, President Zuma said O.R. Tambo consistently emphasized the importance of having maximum political and organizational unity.
He added that ANC members should draw lessons from the illustrious leader and promote unity in action within the movement and the country.
ANC supporters from different provinces joined in the party's birthday celebrations and the ANC managed to fill Orlando Stadium for its celebration.
In the past week, the hashtag "Don'tFillUpTheStadium" trended with users criticising the ruling party for the lavish spending on its anniversary celebrations.
