A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of the Illawarra, as damaging winds lash the region on Sunday afternoon.

The wild weather, which is expected to continue overnight into Monday, has seen a wind gust in excess of 90km/h recorded at Bellambi Point.

The 91km/h north-westerly wind gust was recorded at 2.48pm, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a warning about 20 minutes later.

The Bureau says a complex low pressure system over the Bass Strait extends a trough over New South Wales.

Damaging winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected over parts of the Illawarra on Sunday afternoon through to the early hours of Monday.

“Winds are expected to gradually ease during Monday morning,” the warning said.
