Umbrella, snow boots or coat: What you'll need for New Year's Eve
The national weather forecast for Dec. 31, 2016, called for even more snow to accumulate in parts of New England and rain showers for the Mississippi Valley.
Rain or snow from four separate storms will lead to a dreary New Year’s Eve in several spots across the country Saturday night, with some of the worst weather likely in the South and Southwest. Only the central U.S. and the East Coast look to be completely dry for holiday revelers.
Light snow will spread from the Great Lakes into at least the interior Northeast by Saturday evening, according to the Weather Channel. However, most of the immediate East Coast all the way from New England to Florida should be dry and seasonable.
Temperatures will range from the 30s and 40s in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to the 60s and 70s in Florida.
In New York City, chilly and dry weather is in store for the Times Square ball drop, AccuWeather said.
Rain and a few thunderstorms look likely in parts of the Deep South on Saturday night, the Weather Channel said. The heaviest rain should be in Louisiana and Mississippi, where more than 2 inches is possible, the National Weather Service predicts.
Folks ringing in 2017 in New Orleans will likely endure heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding.
A storm will soak the normally dry Southwest and southern California on Saturday into Saturday night.
The storm should bring showers not only to the Los Angeles area, but also San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix just in time for New Year’s Eve revelers and outdoor activities.
“Chillier air tagging along with the storm can push snow levels down to the passes in Southern California with possible slippery conditions during late Saturday night,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Ken Clark.
Farther north, yet another system will bring rain and snow to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. Snow will fall at higher elevations, while rain is likely along the coast.
Most of the Plains and Upper Midwest will see clear skies but typically chilly conditions New Year’s Eve. Temperatures will range from the teens in Minnesota to the 40s in Texas.
