SOUTH AFRICA’S WESTERN CAPE PROVINCE ENHANCES FIRE-FIGHTING RESOURCES
The government of South Africa’s Western Cape Province has enhanced the fire fighting resources in the province in preparation for this (Southern Hemisphere) summer fire season.
The Local Minister of Environmental Affairs in the provincial government, Anton Bredell, said here Monday that 10 more airfields had been made available for 23 aircraft to use during fire emergencies.
Thirty-six airstrips are now available while ground fire-fighting crews have also been expanded.
Bredell appealed to the public to co-operate with fire personnel in the event of a fire.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, James-Brent Styan, added that Bredell had called on visitors and residents of Western Cape to act quickly and responsibly to help in preventing fires and to fight fires.
“We’ve found in the past year that we’ve managed to extinguish 95 per cent of fires because we managed to get to them within the first hour,” he said.
