SOUTH AFRICA’S CABINET CONCERNED OVER RACIAL INCITEMENT BY PUBLIC FIGURES

South Africa's Cabinet has expressed concern about racial incitement by public figures, says Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.

Briefing journalists in Parliament here Thuysday following the Cabinet's regular meeting on Wednesday, he said the Cabinet had condemned the coffin incident in Mpumalanga Province where two men were brought before the Middleburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for being involved in what appears to be a racially-motivated incident where they forced a man into a coffin, threatening to bury him alive.

They abandoned their bail application and will appear in court again next year. A video clip of the incident has solicited outrage on social media.

Radebe said the Cabinet was concerned about racial incidents in the country. "Cabinet is concerned at the incitement of racial tensions and violence by public figures which detracts from our hard won freedom," he added.

"South Africans must condemn the detrimental influences such as the racist assault on Rethabile Mlotshwa which only serves to harm our fellow South Africans and does not add to ubuntu of the South African nation."
