SOUTH AFRICA MUST MAKE TEACHING OF MATHS MORE EFFECTIVE, SAYS EDUCATOR
JOHANNESBURG, South African Mathematics Foundation Executive Director Professor Johann EngelbrechtS says the country must make the teaching of Mathematics more attractive to improve students' performance in the subject.
This comes as Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga admits that the quality of Mathematics teachers in South African township schools is poor.
Engelbrecht said here over the weekend that the teaching of Mathematics faced many problems which needed to be urgently addressed.
"The general quality of Mathematics is not what we would like it to be, that's one of the serious issues that needs to be addressed," he stressed.
"Currently, our curriculum is so full that the exposure to mathematics is very superficial and our students are not understanding deeply. So, we should seriously look at the curriculum and it's definitely unfair to these students to give them one sided exposure."
