South Africa: Mandeni Rapists to Spend Life Imprisonment in Jail
Nhlakanipho Mthethwa (19) and Sibusiso Sithole (20) were each sentenced to life imprisonment for rape plus 20 years for house robbery and kidnapping by the KwaDukuza Regional Court.
Their sentence came after the court heard how they attacked the couple at Mangethe area, Mandeni. It is alleged that on 25 January 2015, at approximately 20:00, a 39-year-old woman and her fiancee were sleeping when they were attacked by the two men who broke the door and gained entrance. They demanded cell phones and cash before kidnaping her. She was taken to a nearby bush where they repeatedly raped her. Charges of rape, house robbery and kidnapping were opened for investigation at Mandeni police station. The docket was transferred to KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child protection and sexual offences Unit for further investigation. Both accused were arrested on the following day and made several court appearances before they were convicted and sentenced.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the heavy sentence handed to the accused. "These sentences will send a message to those who keep on engaging themselves in criminal activities. It will also send a strong message to other criminals who target the vulnerable women and children," said Langa.
