South Africa: Four Alleged Attempted Robbers Arrested – Firearms and Drugs Recovered
Four suspects aged between 36 and 44 years who were allegedly involved in an attempted robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms as well as drugs will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 23 November 2016 facing their charges. They were arrested after Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police Task Team, K9 Unit, Flying Squad and local police were alerted about the suspects who allegedly attempted to rob a victim in the area.
It is alleged that the victim who was carrying a large amount of cash was driving his Toyota Hilux bakkie at Archie Gumede on his way to Imbali when a suspicious sedan vehicle smashed into his vehicle. Four suspects allegedly started to shoot towards the victim but luckily he was not hurt. Police were immediately alerted and responded to the complaint. Description of the vehicle was given to the police who started to look for this suspected vehicle. The said vehicle was spotted in the area and four suspects were arrested. On further investigation, the police proceeded to their homes where they found four 9mm pistols, one Uzzi rifle and drugs.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised a joint operation by various units for swiftly responding attempted robbery complaint and arrested the suspects. 'The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province, he said.
