SOUTH AFRICA DESTROYS 23,000 ILLEGAL FIREARMS
Some 23,000 illegal firearms confiscated by the South African police were destroyed in a foundry in Germiston, Gauteng province, as part of efforts to fight that scourge in the country.
The largest confiscations were made in Western Cape province (3,461) and it is estimated that about 9,200 weapons were related to crimes, authorities said.
Many weapons were stolen and are used to commit crimes, Lieutenant General Khomotso Pahlane, interim national police commissioner, told reporters.
There is a long road to try that citizens can live safer, he noted.
Last year, on the occasion of the International Day for the Destruction of Weapons (July 9), some 14,000 firearms were destroyed.
According to the pressure group Gun Free South Africa, 18 people are killed as an average every day by a firearm.
