Mtumodzi Arrested for Breach of Peace, Taken Ill
Former presidential secretary Chikumbutso Mtumodzi was taken ill and admitted to City Centre Private Clinic in Lilongwe shortly after his arrested in the Malawi capital on Wednesday afternoon.
A senior police official confirmed to Zodiak Mtumodzi suffered high blood pressure while in a holding cell at Lingadzi Police in Area 18.
Earlier, Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula told Zodiak Mtumodzi was arrested for alleged conduct likely to cause a breach peace.
Zodiak understands the police had been hunting for Mtumodzi since last week when he allegedly insulted police officers who were confiscating goods from illegal street vendors.
Other reports indicate Mtumodzi has been meeting street vendors whose goods were confiscated by the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) and was mobilising them to revolt against the authorities, allegations he denied in the media.
An insider also indicated Mtumodzi, a renowned journalist who also co-founded the now defunct New Dawn for Africa (NDA) party, would be taken to court on Thursday.
Mtumodzi served as press secretary for late President Bingu wa Mutharika before he was fired and drafted into the civil service. He worked as director information in the ministry of information and currently owns Dziko FM.
Mtumodzi, became popular in the late ‘90s along with fellow journalists Ken Ndanga (now publicity secretary of the United Democratic Front – UDF) and Tom Chiumia (who runs Nyasa Times) when they formed the NDA.
The party was widely seen a proxy of the UDF aimed at confusing supporters of former cabinet minister Brown Mpinganjira, whose National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had become a strong critic of Bakili Muluzi’s UDF government.
