Motion for a resolution on the prevalence of HIV among women – B8-2016-1375

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.whereas there were 2.1 million new HIV infections in 2015;

B.whereas cases of HIV are increasing among certain categories and the percentage of women is growing: the latter now represent 51% of all HIV-positive people;

C.whereas among young people aged 15 to 24, 46% of all new HIV diagnoses concern women in Europe and 66% in Africa, where in the latter case the numbers are twice as high as that observed among men of the same age;

D.whereas women form a risk group for HIV infection due to their vulnerability to physical attacks and human trafficking;

E.whereas the prevalence of HIV among women is all the more worrying considering the insufficient access to anti-retroviral treatments: only 62% of HIV-positive women who are pregnant for instance benefit from anti-retroviral treatment which prevents the child from being infected;

1.Encourages the Commission to identify women as a risk group for this infection.
