A man recovering in hospital after from being shot in the head during a Christmas Day robbery on the Caribbean island of Antigua is making ‘incredible progress’, say his family.

Chris Tester, from south Devon, was flown home by air ambulance after a fundraising campaign raised more than £105,000 to get him home for treatment – and he has now recovered enough to speak and eat in hospital in Plymouth.

He was shot on Christmas Day in his parents’ Antiguan restaurant while trying to shield his mother.

His family and friends have on Thursday posted a new update on his progress.

They said: “We’re so pleased to let you all know that Chris is doing really well. Better than we had ever hoped.

“He’s been speaking a few words and has even managed to eat something. This really is quite incredible.

“We’re still waiting to find out how his eyesight has been affected by his injury. Obviously we have to take each day at a time and hope that Chris continues to recover as well as he has already.

“We were sent some photos of the air ambulance that your generous donations helped to fund. Just to give you some idea of what Chris flew back to the UK in.

“Again we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This wouldn’t have happened without your help.”

On Wednesday the family said they were continuing the public appeal as they said the injuries that Chris sustained means that he may have lost part or all of his sight.

“This is being established over the next few days. Obviously this is life changing for Chris and his family and it goes without saying that he will require many months of rehabilitation,” they said.

The Crowdfunding appeal at http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/chris-tester-urgent-a… is continuing and has so far raised £105,000.
