CHINESE HELD IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR ATTEMPT TO DEAL IN RHINO HORN
A Chinese national has been arrested for allegedly dealing in rhino horn with an estimated value of 6.6 million Rand (about 471,000 US dollars, according to the Hawks, the South African Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
The 28-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport while in transit from Namibia on board a South African Airways flight to Hong Kong.
“A routine search was conducted and police recovered eighteen rhino horns weighing about 43 kilogrammes concealed in his travelling bags,” the Hawks said in a statement here Thursday.
The man is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court Friday under the Endangered Spices Act for dealing in rhino horn.
